History of the Garrison PlayersEstablished in 1953, Garrison Players is a nonprofit, volunteer-based community theatre group dedicated to enriching the cultural life of Dover and the surrounding communities by presenting high-quality theatrical productions geared for family audiences; encouraging people of all ages to enjoy and participate in the many facets of the performing arts; and restoring and maintaining the Hiram Roberts Grange as an active arts center and home for Garrison Players’ productions. The Story of the GrangeThe building is located on Route 4 in Rollinsford. It was constructed in 1894 from a design by noted Dover architect Alvah Ramsdell, who later designed what is now Dover Junior High School, the old Strafford Bank building and many others, including the New Durham Town Hall, which is on the National Historic Register. Structurally sound, the building will now provide a home for all the arts and a meeting space for small groups for many years to come. The small auditorium provides an intimate space for drama, musical concerts or displays of local art work. The historic Hiram R. Roberts Grange Hall is again ready to become a social focal point for our area. For more than eighty of its ninety-some year history, the Grange was known as a place for wholesome family events and where the community could come together to socialize. The Garrison Players have transformed this landmark building into an Arts Center for the visual and performing arts by continuing a $331,000 fundraising effort. The group has, with the help of many volunteers, restored the interior meeting room and the second-floor theatre. They have installed an exterior ramp and a lift to make the building handicap accessible. Through the efforts of Jonathan Wilson, a local Eagle Scout, the grounds have been meticulously landscaped with beautiful gardens and even a water feature, and a stairway constructed from the lower driveway to the upper parking lot. | |||||||||
